Week 1 Puppies are Born

Puppies are Born

Week 1

Week 1: Whelping Box and Environment

During the initial weeks, puppies stay in a whelping box within a quiet, clean room. The temperature is carefully regulated for the comfort of both the mother and her pups. Vet Fleece Bedding is used to ensure proper traction and to prevent moisture buildup around the puppies.

Daily Care Routine

  • Weighing: Puppies are weighed twice a day.
  • Collar Changes and Nail Trimming: Collars are changed and nails are trimmed every 2-3 days.

Dam’s Well-being

The health of the dam (mother dog) is a top priority. This involves:

  • Regular physical examinations.
  • Checking for signs of mastitis.
  • Monitoring behavioral changes.
  • Assessing milk production.
  • Providing a balanced diet and necessary supplements.

Stimulation Techniques

By days 5 to 7, large stuffed toys or rolled towels are placed under the bedding to stimulate the puppies’ bodies and nervous systems.

Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) and Early Scent Introduction (ESI)

ENS (Days 3-16)

ENS involves five exercises to enhance puppies’ resilience and adaptability:

  1. Tactile Stimulation: Gently tickling the puppy’s toes with a Q-tip.
  2. Head Held Erect: Holding the puppy perpendicular to the ground.
  3. Head Pointed Down: Holding the puppy with its head pointing downward.
  4. Supine Position: Holding the puppy on its back briefly.
  5. Thermal Stimulation: Applying an ice pack gently to the puppy’s body.
