Grooming Tools Introduction

Doodles live their whole lives on a grooming table. We make sure the first time is never scary.

Merlin, our Standard Poodle, freshly groomed

Why it matters

A doodle coat needs brushing several times a week and a professional groom every six to eight weeks. Puppies who first meet clippers at four months, held down by a stranger, can carry that fear forever.

Ours meet every tool in the whelping room: brushes at three weeks, nail trims weekly from day one, the sound of clippers and a dryer running in the room, then on their body, always paired with food.

In practice

How we introduce the tools

  1. Weekly nail trims

From week one, so paws being handled is simply normal.

  2. Brush & comb

Daily short sessions with a slicker and a steel comb — face, ears, feet, tail.

  3. Clippers & dryer

First heard from across the room, then felt switched off, then running on the body.

  4. Table time

Standing on a raised surface with a treat, building the calm 'groomer's stand'.

What it means for you

At home with your puppy

  • Calm at the groomer

Your groomer will thank you — and your puppy will enjoy going.

  • Fewer mats

A puppy who tolerates brushing gets brushed, and a brushed coat stays healthy.

  • You can keep it going

We send home the brushing routine and tool list we use.
