10 Step Handling

Ears, mouth, paws, tail — every part of your puppy has been gently handled hundreds of times before you meet them.

Why it matters

Veterinarians, groomers and children all handle dogs in ways dogs don't naturally love. Our ten-step routine turns being touched anywhere into a relaxed, expected part of the day.

Each puppy is handled individually every day, with the steps done slowly and paired with a treat, so restraint and examination feel like affection rather than threat.

In practice

The ten steps

  1. 1–3 · Head

Ears checked inside and out, eyes and muzzle stroked, lips lifted to look at teeth.

  2. 4–5 · Body

Collar-area hold, then a full-body stroke from shoulders to hips.

  3. 6–7 · Legs & paws

Each leg lifted, each paw squeezed and toes spread.

  4. 8 · Tail

Lifted and gently held — the vet's thermometer moment, practiced early.

  5. 9 · Cradle & restraint

Held on their back and in a gentle hug for a few calm seconds.

  6. 10 · Release & reward

Every session ends with freedom and a treat.
